IMA Maharashtra State received the IMA News Bulletin Award from IMA Hqrs at NATCON 2017. This is the third consecutive year that we have bagged this prestigious award. We would like to thank the other members of the editorial team, the office bearers and administrative staff of IMA MS for all their help and support.

Self-regulation is defined as the act of upholding its own rules and laws by an organization without external agency of intervention. IMA Hqrs has recently come out with a paper on self-regulation and policies on health care relating to drugs, devices, investigations, hospital admissions, emergency care, unethical acts etc. We look at these provisions aimed at enabling doctors to practice with humility and to reform the existing health care system.

A 12-hour nation wide stir was called by the Indian Medical Association on 2nd January 2018 to protest a proposed legislation seeking to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the National Medical Commission. Many clauses in the bill are hugely detrimental to public health. The bill takes away the stipulation that to practice modern medicine one needs to have MBBS. NMC brings in an additional Schedule IV through which the Government can recognize any one to practice modern medicine. The bill was referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee following protest from the medical profession spearheaded by IMA. The Parliamentary Committee has been asked to give its report before the budget session. IMA’s objection to the bill is included in this edition.

Please send in your suggestions, viewpoints and feedback.
